Abbie Cornish is learning Spanish for her new movie The Girl - because more than 70 per cent of her dialogue in the immigration drama is in a foreign language.

The Stop-Loss star plays a 25-year-old Texan who smuggles Mexicans into America to earn extra cash - and she thought it would be better if she took the trouble to learn Spanish for the film, rather than speak it phonetically.

She tells WENN, "It's quite a challenging film as I've had to learn to speak Spanish and I don't know how to speak it at all. It's an incredible feat because I've only got a couple of months to prepare.

"I just think it will be authentic if I could learn as much as I can before I get there because then at least I understand what I'm saying.

"I go to Mexico soon to spend time with the young girl (co-star) Maritza, who doesn't speak a word of English and is a non-actor and a native. It's pretty awesome.

"I'm actually really excited and I love places because I love to travel and I've never been to Mexico. I love that energy where the culture and the life is so vibrant."
