Alex Kurtzman has hinted at the path that Chris Pine's character could take in the new Star Trek movie.

Pine is set to reprise the role of Captain James T.Kirk in the JJ Abrams movie and Kurtzman says that it will be an interesting journey for him as he doesn't understand what it means to be captain.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter the writer said: "I tend to look at things first and foremost as a character's journey from beginning to end, and oftentimes the journey won't be resolved at the end," he explained.

"Jim Kirk, for example, inherits the Enterprise at the end of Star Trek but that doesn't mean he fully understands what it means to be Captain. It just means, oh, he has the Enterprise now - so now what?

"He's never sent men and women to their deaths before, so what's going to happen when that kind of question comes up for him? I guess I normally look at it from a place of pure character."

Kurtzman has returned to the franchise to pen the screenplay along with Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci.

Filming on the movie is believed to have been completed while Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg have all returned to their roles.

It was back in 2009 that the Star Wars franchise was re-booted by director JJ Abrams and the movie saw the Starship Enterprise go on its maiden voyage.

The Star Trek sequel is expected hit cinema screens 17th May 2013.
