Disney and Tim Burton’s epic 3D fantasy adventure ‘Alice in Wonderland’ broke through the looking glass and smashed records all the way to the top of the box office across the world this weekend, taking a staggering £10.7m in the UK, $116.3m in the US, and $210m globally.

Alice is the biggest 3D opening of all time in the UK, beating Avatar’s £8.5m by 26%. 3D is the big driver, generating 70% of the total gross box office.

Alice is the biggest March opening weekend ever in the UK, surpassing Mr Bean’s previous £6.4m by 68%.

Disney would like to congratulate Tim Burton on his biggest opening weekend ever recorded in the UK and Ireland, out-grossing his previous best, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by 35%.

This remarkable achievement was repeated the world over, including in the US where the movie had the biggest weekend opening for a non-sequel in cinema history.

In the UK, Burton’s home territory, Alice is Disney’s third biggest opening weekend, only behind Pirates of the Caribbean2 and Pirates of the Caribbean3. Alice is Disney’s biggest non-sequel opening in the UK.

Internationally, Alice reigns supreme with a mighty $94m launch, with $55m coming out of EMEA from 65% of the market place.

Alice in Wonderland’ is Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s 7th collaboration. Burton’s top notch crew includes special effects legend Ken Ralston, Avatar designer Robert Stromberg, and multiple Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.

Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter, and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends:  the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. 

Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts, and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

Providing the voices for Wonderland’s menagerie of inhabitants is an eclectic and impressive mix of British acting talent, including Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit, Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, Alan Rickman as Absolem the caterpillar, Timothy Spall as Bayard, Barbara Windsor as the Dormouse, Christopher Lee as the Jabberwocky, Michael Gough as the Dodo, and Paul Whitehouse as the March Hare.

‘Alice In Wonderland’ is currently on general release in all major cinemas across the country.
