Andy Serkis

Andy Serkis says that he had to forget everything that he knew about Gollum from The Lord of the Rings because he was playing a younger version of the character.

Serkis is one of the returning faces in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as he reprises the role of Gollum.

But he had to realise that Gollum had not been through certain things that effect him in The Lord of the Rings and so he had to approach him very differently.

Speaking to the Radio Times the actor said: "I did have to forget almost everything from Lord Of The Rings, because in The Hobbit Gollum hasn't been through any of [the trials] yet.

"He's less physically scarred in the sense that he hasn't been tortured by Sauron, and he's not come out of the Misty Mountains.

"He's been in this cave, on his own, going crazy - but with the comfort of his "Precious", the Ring, the thing that he loves the most. It's his fix."

Serkis was not only part of the cast on The Hobbit but also part of the crew as he also served as second unit director during shooting.

And he is not the only familiar face on the cast list as Ian McKellan, Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving are all back.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released 14th December.
