Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch has talked in detail for the first time about his character in Star Trek Into Darkness - claiming that he is not playing Khan.

It has finally been revealed that Cumberbatch will play John Harrison and the rumour mill has been fuelled more by this revelation as this character does not exist in the original Star Trek stories - many believing it is a red herring.

However Cumberbatch has described his as an 'extra ordinary character' and a man with a real purpose.

Speaking to Access Hollywood the actor said: "I play a character called John and not that other name. It's interesting. Speculation is speculation and that's all fun," he said.

"I play John Harrison who's a terrorist and an extraordinary character in his own right. He's somebody who is not your two-dimensional cookie cutter villain.

"He's got an extraordinary purpose, and I hope that at one point or other in the film you might even sympathise with the reasons he's doing what he's doing - not necessarily the means and the destruction he causes.

"But it was a great ride, not just because he's the bad guy and the antagonist but also because he has a purpose and it's hard not to see his point of view at certain points."

Cumberbatch has had a very successful couple of years and that is set to continue into 2013 as there are a string of projects for release.

As well as Star Trek Into Darkness he has also completed work on August: Osage County and Twelve YEars a Slave.

He will also take on the role of Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at the end of next year.

Star Trek Into Darkness is released 17th May.
