Carey Mulligan has called her rise to stardom a 'crazy ride'.

The actress made hr big screen debut back in 2005 when she took on the role of Kitty Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. But it was her role in An Education that shot her to stardom.

The movie was released last year and saw the British star land her first Best Actress Oscar nomination, losing out to Sandra Bullock.

Speaking to Australia's The Daily Telegraph the actress said: "When you dream of being an actor when you're 6, you dream of lightbulbs around your mirror. It's the fairy-tale version of what it is to be an actor, so it's mad that it's come true."

"It's been a crazy ride.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, so I'm writing stuff down and trying to remember it. As surreal as it is, and as much of an honour as it is to work with people you admire, I'm just going to enjoy it.

"I get the same feeling every time I get a part I really want. Nothing - not even awards - beats that. When you know it's your gig, that's the best feeling in the world."

Mulligan is currently enjoying box office success with Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which has topped the box office both in the UK and the U.S.

And she will be back on the big screen in early 2011 with the big screen adaptation of popular novel Never Let Me Go, which will also star Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield.
