Carey Mulligan has revealed that she was very emotional on the set of her new movie Never Let Me Go and she kept bursting into tears.

Mulligan teams up with fellow Brits Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield in the big screen adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel, which will be directed by Mark Romanek.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actress said: "It's always harder to maintain raw enthusiasm or joy than to go into a really dark place.

"I think for us with this it was trying not to cry, I cry all the time, it's my modus operandi.

"We all wanted to mark each other and say don't drop a tear, we were all watching each other. With our characters we didn't want to portray tragedy, we just wanted to live in the circumstances we were in and the circumstances we had."

Mulligan admitted that she had read the book and it was the simple nature of the story that really drew her to the project.

"I read the book when it came out and loved it, I always loved it first and foremost because it's a love story and it's about, um, you can want very simple things from life but not get them."

Mulligan is currently top of the UK box office with Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which sees her work with Michael Douglas and filmmaker Oliver Stone.

Never Let Me Go is released 21st January
