The Social Network

Mind-bending drama Inception and The Social Network were the big winners at the Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Friday (14Jan11), picking up 10 honours between them.

The Social Network claimed Best Film, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Score (Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross), while Inception took home six prizes, including Best Action Film, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

The 16th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards also honoured Oscar favourites Natalie Portman and Colin Firth with acting awards for their roles in Black Swan and The King's Speech, respectively, while Christian Bale and Melissa Leo claimed the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards for their roles in The Fighter. The boxing movie also landed the Best Acting Ensemble accolade.

It was a big night for Matt Damon, who was acknowledged by the Broadcast Film Critics Association for his humanitarian efforts.

The True Grit star was the recipient of the fourth annual Joel Siegel Award for Service to the Community largely for founding charity
Water.org, with which he hopes to provide drinking water to people in the world's poorest areas.

Damon, who received a standing ovation as he took to the stage at the Hollywood Palladium, used his acceptance speech to urge Americans to donate to his charity.

He said, "These are issues we've known how to solve here for 100 years in our country... Just imagine if we cured AIDS tomorrow and in 100 years, people were still dying of it, three million of them a year. It's just really ridiculous."
