Denis Leary has heaped praise on his young The Amazing Spider-Man co-stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

The actor admits that he did not know what to expect from the two actors, who take on the role of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in the film, but calls them the 'real deal'.

Leary plays Stone's on-screen father in the film and he reveals that both Emma & Andrew were great at improvising a scene.

Speaking to Newsarama the actor said: "I didn't know what to expect from Andrew and Emma, and quite frankly they were the real deal.

"They were all about the work, they were able to improvise which not a lot of people can do, everyone thinks they can but they can't really do it.

"Every actor thinks he can do comedy and it's just not f**king true. And everyone thinks they can improvise and a lot of people can't! And she's great at it, so is Andrew."

The Amazing Spider Man sees the franchise given a total re-boot as the story of Peter Parker is taken back to the beginning by Marc Webb.

And it's set to be a busy summer of promoting for Leary as he is also returning to the Ice Age franchise to once again voice the character of Diego.

The Amazing Spider-Man is out now.
