Daniel Day Lewis

Daniel Day Lewis admits that he felt fearful and yet privileged at playing Abraham Lincoln.

The double Oscar winner will play the sixteenth U.S. president in Steven Spielberg's new biopic Lincoln - which will hit the big screen in the new year.

The movie is already surrounded in Oscar talk and Lewis could well find himself battling it out for another Oscar.

But he admits that there were reservations about taking on the role as he wanted to do Lincoln justice.

Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "I was very shy about the idea of taking on this.

"Plus, I like working here. I've been tremendously privileged in being able to work in this country over the years.

"The idea of desecrating the memory of the most-beloved president this country has ever known was just kind of a fearful thing to me."

Lincoln is the first big screen outing for Lewis since he took on the role of Guido Contini in Nine back in 2009.

But he is joined on the cast list by Joseph Gordon Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field.

Lincoln is released 25th January.
