Dominic Monaghan admits that he probably won't be in The Hobbit despite talking about a cameo appearance with Peter Jackson.

The British actor took on the role of Merry in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the role that made him a star, but he will not be involved in the prequel project.

Speaking to SFX magazine the actor said: "We've been saying that we'd love to come back as some sort of cameo, or turn up in the background, and Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have said that would be a great thing for us to do, but I think they've got slightly more important things to deal with before they talk about the four Hobbits doing a cameo."

And while Monaghan has worked closely with Jackson and co in the past he has revealed that he knows nothing about who will be cast in the movie.

"I know that Ian McKellen will be in it and obviously Andy Serkis will be in it, but apart from that I'm not sure who would be in it."

Since shooting to fame in The Lord of the rings the actor has found huge success on TV as part of the cast for hit show Lost, before going onto FlashForward.

He was last seen on the big screen last year when he took on the role of Bolt in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But he has completed work on new movie Soldiers of Fortune, which sees him reunite with Sean Bean.
