Helen Mirren has backed Colin Firth to win the Best Actor Oscar.

Mirren picked up her Best Actress Academy Award in 2007 playing Queen Elizabeth II, the daughter of Colin Firth’s King George VI.

And the actress hopes that the success that Firth has been enjoying so far this year for his performance in The King’s Speech will kick off a good spell for UK cinema.

Speaking to MSN at the Premiere of her new movie Brighton Rock the actress said: I think he deserves it, and I think he will get it.

"It is always in a dangerous position. I think it's very sad that we lost the British [UK] Film Council... it's strange, the British film industry comes in waves and I hope that this film will be a part of the good wave and a nice big wave."

Mirren stars alongside Sam Riley and John Hurt and is her first movie since the success of Red last year.

She has already completed work on The Tempest, due out later this year, The Door and Arthur with Russell Brand.
