Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren is still shocked she was made a Dame - because the actress thought she was too "raunchy" to be honored by the Queen.

The Oscar-winning star was included in British monarch Queen Elizabeth II's honors list in 2003.

And Mirren was astounded by the high profile accolade because she was convinced her saucy roles in movies including Hussy and The Cook and His Wife & Her Lover had ruined her reputation.

She tells Britain's Sunday Mirror, "I was very surprised because I thought I was not that sort. I was always a bit raunchy, so I thought, 'I'll never be a Dame, I'm not the right sort of person.'

"So I was really honored. It's always great to be recognized by your country."

Mirren is back on the big screen with her new movei Red, which sees her team up with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman.

And the actress has plenty of projects in the pipeline having completed work on The Tempest, The Debt and Arthur.

Red is out now.
