James Franco has revealed that his first meeting with director Danny Boyle was not straight forward.

The pair met to discuss their new movie 127 Hours and Franco’s casual and laid back nature led the Oscar winning filmmaker to believe that he was on drugs.

Speaking to Bravo’s Inside the Actors Studio Franco said: "[Boyle] thought I was stoned at the meeting.

"Somebody told him that I wasn't and I'm just very 'relaxed', and he should give me another chance, so he did and that was it and he gave me the role."

127 Hours, which sees Franco take on the role of climber Aron Rolston, has already been a hit on the festival circuit and is being tipped for success on the award circuit.

The movie is the first film for Boyle since Slumdog Millionaire, which brought him a Best Picture and Best Director Oscar.

James Franco has already had box office success in 2010 as he starred alongside Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love.

He has already completed work on comedy Your Highness and Rise of the Apes, both of which are due out next year.

127 Hours is released 7th January.
