Marvel has pushed back big screen adaptations of Thor and The Avengers by a year.

Earlier this week Josh Hartnett and Alexander Skarsgård had been lined up for roles in the film that will be directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Hartnett had been linked to the role of villian Loki while Skarsgård is the latest name that has been attacked to the lead role.

However The Hollywood reporter has revealed that Thor has now been moved back from it's July 16, 2010 slot to June 17, 2011.

The Avengers, which brings together a string of Marvel comic heroes has also been delayed by a year. orignally expected to be released July 15, 2011 it will now arrive in cinemas May 4, 2012.

David Maisel, Marvel Studios chairman, told The Hollywood Reporter that the reason behind the delay was to space out individual superhero movies before bringing them all together in The Avengers.

"[It] maximizes the visibility of our single-character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character The Avengers film in 2012."

Other Marvel solo projects include Iron Man 2, Spiderman 4 and Captain America.
