Meryl Streep believes she would struggle becoming an actress today because everyone is too self aware.

Streep kicked off her acting career back in 1971 and has enjoyed almost forty years at the top of the Hollywood tree.

Speaking to Contactmusic the actress said: "The world was different when I was a young actress.

"These days there's so much scrutiny, everyone's so self aware, and that self consciousness is the thing that kills your acting ability.

"What you look like, and how you seem, is all young actors consume themselves with instead of their characters. It makes it so much harder to be fresh each time."

Earlier this year she received her sixteenth Oscar nomination, now the most nominated actor in Oscar history, for her performance in Julie & Julia.

On Sunday she could walk away with the Best Actress Academy Award but faces tough competition from Sandra Bullock, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe and Helen Mirren.

She has already won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her performance.
