Michael Caine has revealed his theories behind the ambiguous ending of his last film Inception.

The British actor teamed up with Christopher Nolan once again, after appearing in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Prestige, for the latest thriller from the filmmaker.

Speaking to Radio One he said: "I loved the movie Inception, it was absolutely great. I eventually understood it because Chris has a mind all of his own.

And while the movie has been a major hit with the critics and cinema go-ers everyone was left asking the same question at the end... is a dream or is it real?

And Caine has a theory of his own on the very subject: "It drops at the end, that's when I come back on. Young people say to me, 'At the end, when you're there, is it real or is it a dream?' I say, 'If I'm there, it's real because I'm never in the dream'."

Inception was the first time we had seen Caine on the big screen since Harry Brown last year but he has already completed work on Gnomeo and Juliet, in which he lends his voice.

The actor also has a couple of projects in the pipeline including Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and the third Batman movie.
