Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang has toppled Alice In Wonderland to claim the top spot at the UK box office, denying Tim Burton's fantasy movie a month at the top.

The movie sees Emma Thompson return to the role of Nanny McPhee, a role she first played back in 2005, she also penned the script.

The movie follows Nanny McPhee who arrives to help a harried young mother (Gyllenhaal) who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war, though she uses her magic to teach the woman's children and their two spoiled cousins five new lessons.

After three weeks at the top of the chart Alice In Wonderland had to settle for second place, although it narrowly missed out on retaining the top spot.

The movie grossed a further £2.4 million in the UK this week taking it's total overall global gross to in excess of $658 million.

The Blind was another new entry at number three as fans flocked to see the actresses Oscar winning performance in the John Lee Hancock directed movie.

Shutter Island fell one place to this week's four, the top four movies all breaking the £1 million barrier, while comedy The Bounty Hunter fell two places to round off the top five.

There was a one place drop for Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon's war movie Green Zone, falling from five to six while it was also down a place for Jackie Chan's The Spy Next Door as it finished at six.

But this week's biggest faller came in the form of I Love You Phillip Morris which fell four places to number eight.

Shank was the only other new entry inside the top ten as it opened at number nine.
