Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed on to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The Oscar winner was one of the first names to be linked to a new character in the franchise and now he is set to take on the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.

Heavensbee is the new Gamemaker after the demise of Seneca Crane at the end of the first movie - he has a much bigger role in the third and final instalment.

An insider told E! News: "The deal was made right before the Fourth of July holiday."

Jena Malone is another name that has been linked to the sequel as she is believed to be the frontrunner for the role of Johanna Mason.

Jennifer Lawrence will return as Katniss Everdeen while Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth are back as Peeta and Gale.

But Gary Ross will not be back in the director's chair and he has been replaced by Francis Lawrence.

The Hunger Games has been one of the biggest grossing movies of the year so far as it has grossed in excess of $678 million at the global box office.

Filming on the sequel is set to begin in September.
