Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott never treated Robin Hood like a myth.

The director is back on the big screen this week with his new movie Robin Hood, which is a re-telling of the classic tale that we all know so well.

There have been plenty of incarnations of Robin Hood over the years but Scott reveals that he wanted to ground his movie in reality.

In an interview with MTV the filmmaker said: "I never liked the green tights. I didn't like the feather in the hat. It didn't work for me. Even as a kid, it was not my idea of Robin Hood.

"Kevin Costner's was fun, leaning more heavily on the clowning of Robin Hood.On this one, I wanted to go more real, because I really believe he existed.

"The ones to date always treated Robin Hood like a myth, part of a fairy story."

The movie, which is Scott's first since Body of Lies back in 2008, stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett and opened the Cannes Film Festival.

Robin Hood is out now.
