With a string of successful blockbusters in 2009 British cinema is at a seven year high.

It's been a good year for cinema in the UK with the likes of New Moon, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the box office has grossed £944 million.

Despite the recession film lovers have flocked to cinemas to catch all the latest releases as the Film Council revealed that attendances were at 172.9 million.

John Woodward, chief executive officer of the UK Film Council told Digital Spy: "Taken together, these box office and inward investment numbers show how film in the UK has moved from the margins back to the mainstream, helping sustain jobs and promote the UK's place on the international stage.

"[We are] weathering the recession well."

"British cinema-goers are voting with their feet - they want to see big event movies, many of which depend on outstanding British talent and are made in the UK thanks to our reliable film tax credit."

It's currently Avatar that is top of the UK box office, a film which has grossed over £49 million in the UK alone.
