Sigourney Weaver has hit out at Hollywood saying that it's 'stuck in a rut'.

The actress went on to say that the best roles for actress are coming in TV which is enjoying a 'golden age'

Speaking to MSN the actress said: "Well if you look at television, there are many wonderful actresses getting such good roles - I feel in a way it's a kind of golden age for all ages working now."

"I think that Hollywood is sort of stuck in its formulaic rut to a certain extent.

"It doesn't want to spend a lot of money unless it's a big budget blockbuster like Iron Man, but in terms of the business as a whole, television is such an exciting place to work.

"Actually I feel very positive about the business because there's a lot of activity and many stories of different sizes being told, and that ensures a lot of work for all of us, including women of any age."

And Weaver, who shot to fame in Alien, believed it was a brave move by director Ridley Scott to make the Ripley a female character.

"At the time I played Ripley, women were entering the workforce and were taking on jobs only men had done before, in the armed forces and in industry, so I think it was the right time for that to happen.

"What I love about Ripley is that I was allowed to play a woman as a complicated character, without a man, without anything and that is still unusual.

"I sort of blame (directors) Ridley Scott for all of that and Jim Cameron, because they love women and respect women. Ridley just let Ripley be a person."
