Stanley Tucci has admitted that he tried to get out of his The Lovely Bones role.

The actor takes on the role of child killer George Harvey in Peter Jackson's big screen adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones.

In an interview with Metro the actor said: "I've played so many villains. Eichmann [in Conspiracy] was charming but this guy was awful, oh just awful. I'm just happy he doesn't look like me.

"There wouldn't have been many Italian-looking guys like me in suburban Pennsylvania in 1973.

"If I were to have walked in looking like me, I'd immediately have aroused suspicion."

Despite his nerves about the role he has picked up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance.

But he faces tough competition from Woody Harrelson, Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz and Christopher Plummer.

The Lovely Bones is released 19th February.
