Star Trek

J.J. Abrams' reinvigorated Star Trek has been named Film of the Year 2009 with James Corden and Mathew Horne's film Lesbian Vampire Killers taking the Flop of the Year title according to a poll of over 20,000 film fans.

In the 2009 film review by LOVEFiLM, the UK's largest online DVD & games rental service and entertainment website, members were asked to crown the winners and expose the losers of the year.

After wowing cinema audiences in April 2009, Star Trek has been hailed by many as successfully opening up the franchise to new audiences.

Directed by Lost creator J.J. Abrams, the film proved a winner with fans voting the film into first place with 13 per cent.

Danny Boyle's eight time Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire, the rags-to-riches tale of a Mumbai teen, came a close second with 12 per cent and was also the most rented title of 2009.

Gran Torino, a film directed by, produced by and starring Clint Eastwood as a vigilante neighbour, was named in third place with nine per cent - followed by the much applauded comeback of Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler (eight per cent).

Mirroring the film's storyline of a return to grace, the role earned Rourke a Best Leading Actor BAFTA award and Oscar nod in the process and has led to high profile follow-up roles in films including the upcoming Iron Man 2.

In fifth place with seven per cent was the summer hit District 9 - the alien science fiction thriller from director Neill Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson.

Despite a low budget and unknown cast, the film proved a sleeper hit with audiences and globally took more than six times its $30million production cost - a total of $203million.

James Cameron's December smash Avatar even crept into the top ten Film of the Year list in eighth place ahead of Let The Right One In and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Flop of the Year 2009 Lesbian Vampire Killers starring Gavin and Stacey pair Corden and Horne was universally panned by both critics and audiences alike, taking 14 per cent of the vote to take first place.

The double act of Miley Cyrus and dad Billy Ray was not enough to win over audiences after the bubblegum pop of Hannah Montana: The Movie put the film in second place in the flop list (12 per cent).

Likewise, Miley's Disney Channel mates the Jonas Brothers' 3D venture also failed to captivate film fans with Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience voted in third place with 11 per cent.

Released at a similar time to Slumdog Millionaire in January 2009, somehow the tale of a lost Chihuahua called Chloe in Beverly Hills Chihuahua didn't have the same appeal - it bombed at the cinema and was voted the fourth worst film of 2009 (nine per cent).

The follow up to Borat - Sacha Baron Cohen's Brüno - was voted in fifth place on the flop list.

After launching too much controversy with a staged clash with Eminem at the MTV Movie Awards, the film's crude comedy missed the bar with audiences and failed to repeat the success of the first film
(eight per cent).
