The Final Destination has toppled Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds at the U.S. box office to take the number one spot.

The fourth film in the horror franchise grossed over $28.3 million in it's opening weekend while Iglourious Basterds grossed a further $20 million.

After a teen's premonition of a deadly race-car crash helps saves the lives of his peers, Death sets out to collect those who evaded their end.

Basterds had to be content with the number two spot while Halloween 2 rounded off the top three in a horror movie dominated weekend.

Peter Jackson produced District 9 fell two places from two to four and it was also a two place drop for G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra at number five.

The only other new entry came in the form of Taking Woodstock which opened at number nine.
