The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has held off the challenge from Jack Reacher to remain top of the U.S. box office for a second week.

The movie took $36.7 million to comfortably hold onto the number one spot.

The first instalment has now taken in excess of $433 million at the global box office.

Jack Reacher was the highest new entry at number two as Tom Cruise returns to the big screen.

The movie took $15.6 million and never came anywhere near to challenging for the top spot.

This is 40 was also new at three while Rise of the Guardians dropped two places to four.

Lincoln rounded off the top five after dropped two places from last week's number three.

And the new entries keep on coming as The Guilt Trip is new at six and Monster Inc 3D is in at seven.

Skyfall and Life of Pi were both down four places at eight and nine while The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 was also down four at ten.
