The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 stormed to the top of the U.S. box office taking $139.5 million in it's opening weekend.

The movie is the first part of the final instalment of the hit franchise which sees Bella Swan and Edward Cullen's relationship put to the ultimate test.

Despite negative reviews for the movie fans of the franchise flocked to cinemas and the $139.5 million was the fifth biggest opening weekend of all time.

Happy Feet Two had to settle for second but taking just $22 million the movie did not do as well at the box office as had been expected.

Immortals, which was last week's number one, fell two places after just a week at the top to number three.

Adam Sandler's new movie Jack and Jill and Puss in Boots also fell two places a piece to round off the top five.

Tower Heist and biopic movie J Edgar, which sees Leonardo DiCaprio team up with Clint Eastwood were also down two at six and seven.

While there was also a two place drop for A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas & In Time as they were down at eight and nine.

The Descendents was the third and final new entry inside the top ten this week at number ten.

The George Clooney movie is tipped to pick up a whole host of Oscar nominations next year.
