Tim Burton has revealed that he wanted to bring a new angle to the story of Alice In Wonderland.

The adaptation of the popular story is the first time in the director's chair for Burton since musical Sweeney Todd in 2008.

Speaking to Contactmusic the filmmaker said: "I think there has been around 20 different versions of 'Alice' and I was always intrigued because they've all suffered from the same kind of thing.

"I always loved the material, there is a reason why it's been around for so long, but none of the versions ever really clicked.

"We didn't try to follow the stories. The versions I've always seen are a little girl who seems like a brat, wandering around with a bunch of weirdoes.

"With each of those characters, they're all mad, but we tried to give them their own particular madness."

The movie follows 19-year-old Alice who returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror.

Alice In Wonderland is released 5th March.
