Tom Cruise has described the late Tony Scott as a 'creative visionary'.
Scott and Cruise teamed up for the first time back in 1986 for To Gun, a movie that would go on to change both of their careers.
The movie established Scott as a filmmaker and showed Cruise off to be a bona fide leading man.
In a statement Cruise said: "Tony was my dear friend, and I will really miss him. He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable.
"My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time."
The pair would reunite for Days of Thunder and they were set to work together again as a Top Gun sequel was in the pipeline.
It is believed that just two days before his death Scott met with Cruise to discuss the Top Gun movie.
Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in California.
