Tom Hiddleston has heaped praise on Avengers Assemble director Joss Whedon.

The actor reprised the role of Loki this summer as Whedon brought together an all star cast that included Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson.

And Hiddleston admits that he was impressed by Whedon's attention to detail as he wove all of their stories together.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "I have to take my hat off to Joss Whedon here, there's so much details.

"There's just so much in there. And Joss is such an extraordinary stickler, rightly, for details, you know.

"You can't just create action for actions sake, it's like, 'Why? Why this explosion, why this fight? Why are we doing it here?'

"There's so much depth in this film that I think if you watch it again and again and again, you will see various things about.

"You will definitely see little nods to previous films, that you may have missed the first time watching The Avengers. References to Iron Man, references to Thor, references to Captain America: The First Avenger. And clues to what might come after in the future."

The movie went on to gross in excess of $1.5 billion at the global box office to become the biggest film of 2012 as well as the third biggest movie of all time.

Hiddleston will be playing Loki once again in Thor: The Dark World and filming on that Marvel project has just got under way.

Avengers Assemble is out now on DVD & Blu-Ray.
