Toni Collette has admitted that she is relieved that her career isn't based on how she looks as she enjoys taking on the complex roles.

The actress is currently taking on the central role in United States of Tara, which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Speaking to Contactmusic the actress said: "My career has never been based on how I look, and I don't want it to be. I like my work, like my life, to be much deeper than that - that's something I've managed to escape. I think it's a dangerous pressure.

"I would rather play somebody complex and rich and real than some feckless handbag."

"I appreciate the variety. I've always followed my gut and luckily landed on my feet."

The actress did lend her voice to animation movie Mary and Max last year but she has been seen on the big screen since Hey Hey It's Ester Blueburger in 2008.

She is currently committed to TV show United States of Tara but she has been linked to Scab Girl Asylum.
