Baz Luhrmann says he had a long search to find the right actress to play Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby.

Luhrmann is returning to the big screen next month as he brings F.Scott Fitzgerald's novel to life.

The movie sees him reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio and the two of them went on the search for Daisy - the role eventually going to Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan.

Speaking To Vulture the director: "Leonardo was early on. But the Daisy Buchanan part, that was a harder search.

"Leonardo and I went to all the auditions together, and we knew within minutes of seeing Carey.

"Actually, Leonardo said something really beautiful, I believe. He said, 'You know, Gatsby knew a certain kind of woman, but he would never know a Daisy, a hothouse flower like that.' He understands Gatsby obsessing about her."

The Great Gatsby is the first feature length film for Luhrmann since Australia back in 2008 after working on a series of short projects in recent years.

The movie also sees Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher on the cast list and the movie is set to open the Cannes Film Festival.

The Great Gatsby is released 16th May.
