Ben Affleck is thought to have signed on for the lead role in 'Gone Girl'.

The 'Argo' actor and director is the best man for the role according to producer David Fincher, who is taking the Gillian Flynn best-selling book to the big screen.

Affleck, 40, is set to play a husband whose wife disappears on the day of their fifth anniversary, with all roads seemingly pointing to him as the killer.

The Oscar winner is set to push back his next project - an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel 'Live By Night' - to the end of 2014 in favour of 'Gone Girl' which begins shooting this autumn, according to Deadline.com.

Affleck is reportedly keen on the role and even reached out to Warner Brothers over fourth of July weekend for approval.

Fox and Fincher have been developing 'Gone Girl' since January and reportedly signed a seven figure deal for the right to adapt the novel last July, with Reece Witherspoon's production company Pacific Standard on board as producers.

Affleck will also star in 'Runner Runner', an action drama set in the world of offshore online gambling, co-starring Justin Timberlake, Anthony Mackie and Gemma Arterton, released on September 27.
