Doctor Strange is set to be one of the new Marvel franchises that will be introduced in the autumn of 2016, and will see Cumberbatch step into the biggest film role of his acting career to date.

And a source has told The Sun newspaper that the popular British actor is working hard to build up muscle and bulk for the highly anticipated role.

The insider said: "Doctor Strange was always muscly in the cartoons so Benedict has to look the part when they start filming in the autumn. Skinny Sherlock Holmes will be the last thing anyone thinks about."

Doctor Strange will be one of two Marvel movies to hit the big screen next year - the other being Captain America: Civil War - and it will be the first time that we will be introduced to the character of Stephen Strange.

Scott Derrickson will be in the director's chair for Doctor Strange, in what will be the first Marvel film of his career. It will also be the first time that the director has worked with Cumberbatch.

At the moment, Cumberbatch is the only official member of the cast, but fellow British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has been linked with a role in the film.

As for Cumberbatch, we have not seen him on the big screen since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but he has a very busy year ahead of him. He is set to star alongside Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton in Black Mass in the autumn, and has also completed work on Magik. He is currently filming Jungle Book: Origins, which will be the feature film directorial debut for Andy Serkis.

Filming on Doctor Strange will get underway later this year and is one of the new franchises on the horizon - also watch out for Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Inhumans.

Doctor Strange is released 28th October 2016.
