Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch has landed a role in Black Mass.

Cumberbatch is set to replace Guy Pearce in the new drama about mobster Whitey Bulger.

Johnny Depp is on board to play Bulger, while Cumberbatch will now play his brother Billy Bulger, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Adam Scott has also been brought on to the project, and he will play an FBI agent in the film.

The movie - which is directed by Scott Cooper - will explore Bulger's relationship with the FBI, and is based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob.

Joel Edgerton is on board as FBI agent John Connolly, while Dakota Johnson and Juno Temple are also set to star.

Black Mass will mark the return to the director's chair for Cooper, in what will be his third feature film: Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace were his first two projects.

Cumberbatch will be back on the big screen later this year as he is set to play Alan Turing in new biopic The Imitation Game.

He will also be back as Smaug when The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is released in December.

Filming is already underway on Black Mass, and the film is expected to be released next year.
