The Oscar-winning star of 'Room' has been chosen by Marvel to bring Carol Danvers and her alter-ego to life in the 2019 standalone movie about the superhero.

The news was announced at San Diego Comic Con over the weekend and Brie, 26, also tweeted a picture of herself wearing a Marvel Studios hat and wrote: "Call me Captain Marvel."

She later added: "Thanks for the love! I'm so excited to be part of the team."

'Inside Out' screenwriter Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy's Nicole Perlman are writing the script, however few plot details have been revealed.

Introduced in the comic books in 1977 and regarded as the biggest female hero in the Marvel universe, Carol Danvers is an air force pilot who becomes Captain Marvel after her DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident.

As a result, she is gifted with super-powers of strength and energy and has fought alongside the Avengers, X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D.

The movie was originally announced with a July 2018 date, but was later moved back to March 8, 2019, however Captain Marvel is expected to debut in a cameo or post-credits scene of another Marvel movie before then.
