Carey Mulligan has revealed that researched F.Scott Fitzgerald's wife and his must Ginerva King for her role as Daisy in The Great Gatsby.

The Oscar nominated actress takes on the part of Daisy Buchanan in the latest Baz Luhrmann film which sees her star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

Mulligan read biographies and love letters as she tried to get a better understanding of Daisy and where Fitzgerald drew his inspiration from when writing her.

Speaking to Harper's Bazaar the actress said: "Daisy was difficult to work out, but so fun to play...

"Baz also gave me about seven biographies of Zelda and a stack of love letters from Ginerva.

"You can so easily see where Fitzgerald has taken Daisy from. Just the way Zelda and Ginerva wrote - there were lines we stole for the script."

The Great Gatsby sees Mulligan return to the big screen for the first time since she received critical acclaim for her performance in Shame.

But her next project Inside Llewyn Davis, which is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Great Gatsby is released 16th May.
