Tatum is set to bring the popular X-Men character to the big screen in a solo film next year and this week Rupert Wyatt was announced as the film's director.

Wyatt has already enjoyed critical and commercial success with Rise of the Planet of the Apes and this would be his first film since The Gambler.

Speaking in a Reddit AMA session, Tatum talked about the film project, saying: "We finally found someone that I really do believe wants to make Gambit, it will be the second standalone character. And I just really think because Gambit is not the most popular or the biggest hero, I think there's a really unique opportunity.

"Marvel's done a lot of great movies that have made a ridiculous amount of money, and it's always good to figure how to change the form."

There were rumours that we were going to see Tatum pop up in X-Men: Apocalypse before Gambit moved on to a solo film, but when asked about that during the Q&A session he said: "No ma'am, or sir. I definitely will not."

We have only seen Gambit once in the X-Men series of movies and that was back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and played by Taylor Kitsch. He is one of the biggest and most popular of the X-Men characters and it is great that we are going to finally sees him on the big screen in a big way.

As for Tatum, he will be back on the big screen this summer in Magic Mike XXL and has already completed work on Hail, Caesar! with George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes and Josh Brolin.

Gambit is slated to hit the big screen in the U.S. on 7th October 2016.
