Channing Tatum has given fans an update on the status of a possible Gambit movie project.

It was announced earlier this year that Tatum had landed the role of Gambit, a character that we have seen very little of in the X-Men franchise over the years.

Gambit is expected to make an appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse, before landing his own solo film.

And Tatum says that they are working on bringing some fresh elements to this popular character.

Speaking to MTV, the actor said: "I don’t want to give too much away, because we don’t know that much right now other than who Gambit is.

"We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but maybe not for the first one.

"We want to introduce this character in a very different way. When you try to do something different, you never know right off the bat what that is. We’re feeling our way and really have to just prove that concept of that person."

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to hit the big screen in 2016, and follows in the successful footsteps of First Class and Days of Future Past.

Bryan Singer is set to return to the director's chair, while James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult are back as Charles Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Beast.

As for Tatum, he has lent his voice to new animation film The Book of Life and we will also be seeing him next year in sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending.

The actor is currently filming Magic Mike XXL, which is a sequel to the 2012 movie.
