Don't Breathe has toppled Suicide Squad from the top of the U.S. box office to claim the number one spot.

The horror movie marks the return of Fede Alvarez to the director's chair for the first time since he made his feature film debut with Evil Dead back in 2013.

Don't Breathe took over $26 million in its opening weekend, to comfortably see off the challenge from Suicide Squad, which slipped to number two for the first time.

Suicide Squad grossed just over $12 million this weekend but the film failed to make it a month at the top of the U.S. box office.

Kubo and the Two Strings was the only film on the up this week as it climbed a just a single place from four to number three.

The animated film sees Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron give terrific voice performances and the movie has been winning over the critics.

Sausage Party was down two places this week at four while Mechanic: Resurrection, which sees Jason Statham reprise the role of Arthur Bishop, was the second and final new entry this week at number five.

Pete's Dragon slipped out of the top five for the first time as it dropped one place to six. War Dogs was one of this week's biggest faller as the Todd Phillips-directed film fell four places from three to number seven.

Bad Moms was the only non-mover as the comedy stayed put at eight, while Jason Bourne was down two at number nine.

Ben-Hur was the other four place faller on the chart as the remake of the 1959 classic slipped from six to this week's number ten.
