Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest and most exciting movie releases of the past few years, introducing a whole new set of heroes to fans of the big screen who had up until that point been completely saturated with the Avengers. Sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is right around the corner, which will bring back some of those characters and a whole slew of new ones, whilst writer and director James Gunn is also making his return.

Gunn has continued to mark the upcoming release with a series of messages, hyping up the film and thanking fans for their continued support. One of those messages has seen him praise Dave Bautista’s performance in the second volume, who steps back into the role of Drax.

Taking to his official Facebook page, Gunn marked the actor’s birthday with a complimentary message about his character, writing: “He’s been blowing people’s minds in our early screenings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – exponentially increasing the raw emotion and humour he displayed in the first movie. I couldn’t be more proud of having fought for him to play Drax four and a half years ago.”

The comments come a couple of months after the movie’s trailer broke records, with the visuals becoming the most viewed trailer in a single day for a Marvel Studios movie. The teaser also became the second biggest of all time, coming after Disney’s forthcoming Beauty and the Beast remake.

Bautista joins returning cast members Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, whilst new cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell and Elizabeth Debicki.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is officially released in the UK on April 28, following in the US on May 5.
