Filming is underway on the new film, which sees Redmayne reunite with Les Miserables director Tom Hooper for their second movie project together.

Redmayne was the toast of Hollywood over the weekend when he scooped the Best Actor Oscar for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and The Danish Girl looks set to be another interesting project for the actor.

Based on the novel by David Ebershoff and inspired by the true story of Danish artists Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda, Redmayne will star as Wegener.

Wegener was one of the first men to undergo sex reassignment surgery and later become Lili Elebe. The movie will focus on the relationship between Elebe and wife Greta, who will be played by Alicia Vikander.

Amber Heard and Matthias Schoenaerts will joining Redmayne and Vikander on the cast list. Some are already saying that this could be another award worthy role for the British actor.

Hooper is back in the director's chair for what will be his first film since the success of Les Miserbales back in 2013 - the movie was a box office smash and went on to be nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture.

No UK release date for The Danish Girl has yet been announced.
