Blunt - whose previous film credits include 'Into The Woods' and 'The Devil Wears Prada' - is wanted by the studio to play the central role in its much-anticipated remake of the classic story.

Emily is likely to accept the invitation and it's possible she was offered the role a number of weeks ago, even though news of the project has only recently come to light, Den of Geek reports.

The new 'Mary Poppins' could be directed by Rob Marshall and will take place in London 20 years after the original movie.

It will follow storylines from more of P.L. Travers' children's books that focus on Mary's magical adventures with the Banks family.

The original 'Mary Poppins' starred Julie Andrews as a nanny who comes to the city to work for a banker's unhappy family, while Dick Van Dyke played her closest friend and jack-of-all-trades, Bert.

Disney recently remade two of its all-time classic movies 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Cinderella', and the studio also plans to create a live-action version of 'Beauty And The Beast'.
