Hotel Transylvania 2 was the highest new entry on the chart this week as it led a top three that was dominated by new movies.

The animation film comes three years after the success of the first and sees Genndy Tartakovsky return to the director's chair. Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James and Steve Buscemi were some of the familiar names on the cast list.

Hotel Transylvania 2 took £6.3 million in its first weekend on release to topple The Martian and hold off the challenge from other new movies such as Suffragette and Pan.

Suffragette had the honour of opening the BFI London Film Festival earlier this month and had to settle for second place at the box office this weekend. The movie is the second feature film from filmmaker Sarah Gavron, while Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep led an impressive cast list.

Suffragette, which is tipped to be in the Oscar mix at the beginning of next year, took £2.9 million to finish the weekend at number two.

Pan is a movie that has struggled at the U.S. box office but the Joe Wright movie opened at number three. The movie is inspired by the story and the characters of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, but is a new take on the story that we know so well.

The Martian was down three places this week as the critically acclaimed sci-fi film fell from one to number four. Crimson Peak rounded off the top five as the gothic horror was the fourth and final new entry inside the top five at five.

Sicario was one of two movies that fell four places this week as it dropped from two to number six. Legend and The Intern were both three place fallers as they ended the weekend at seven and eight from last week's four and five.

The Lobster, which sees Rachel Weisz star alongside Colin Farrell, was the fifth and final new entry inside the top ten as the first English speaking film for director Yorgos Lanthimos opened at number nine.

Everest was the other film that slipped four places this week as former number one movie dropped from six to number ten.
