Jamie Dornan has revealed that he did workout as he prepared for Fifty Shades of Grey - however, he said he was 'realistic' about what he would achieve.

Dornan is set to take on the role of Christian Grey in the adaptation of the hit novel - it looks set to be a role that will send his star rocketing.

And while the actor was keen to get into shape for the role, he says that he was not aiming to be likes Chris Hemsworth by the end of his workout programme.

Speaking to Variety, the actor said: "We had realistic expectations that I'm not going to look like Chris Hemsworth in four weeks, nor did we feel I needed to. Christian is not some monster. He's not a beast.

"I'd set my alarm at 4 a.m., and have [a protein shake] pre-made by my bed. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and drink a chocolate milkshake. My wife [Amelia] wasn't too pleased about that."

Fifty Shades of Grey is set to be the first time that we have seen Dornan on the first time since Flying Home, and it will be the biggest film roles of his career to date.

The movie will see him team up with director Sam Taylor-Johnson for the first time, while Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Ehle, and Marcia Gay Harden are just some of the other names on board.

Dornan enjoyed more small screen success in 2014 with the release of the second season of The Falling, which saw him reprise the roles of Paul Spector alongside Gillian Anderson.

Dornan has already completed work on a John Wells directed film - which is currently untitled. The actor is now filming The 9th Life of Louis Drax alongside Sarah Gadon and Aaron Paul.

Fifty Shades of Grey is released 13th February.
