Leto is set to take over the role of the Joker for the first time this summer as he joins the ensemble cast of comic book film Suicide Squad.

This will be the first time that we have seen Leto on the big screen since he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. It is also the first time someone has tackled the role of the Joker since Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

Speaking about the role to EW, the actor said: "You just knew you had to do something different. You had to make it your own. That happens all the time. Whether you're a composer working on a piece of music that was written a century ago, or you're an actor on stage, reinterpreting a play, it's very common these days.

"Directors take on great works of cinema, actors reinterpret roles, that's been going on for a great deal of time. From Scarface to Hamlet. In some ways it's really interesting to reinterpret, redefine."

Suicide Squad sees Leto team up with filmmaker David Ayer, who is tackling the comic book movie genre for the first time. Ayer has brought us movies such as Fury and End of Watch in recent years and it is great to see him back.

An impressive cast has been assembled for Suicide Squad as Leto star alongside Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, and Jai Courtney.

Leto is an actor who does work sparingly and I can't wait to see him put his own spin and stamp on this iconic villain.

Suicide Squad is released 5th August.
