A Bourne movie starring Jeremy Renner is still being worked on and moving forward according to Frank Marshall.

Marshall is serving as producer on sequel to The Bourne Legacy - which introduced us to the character of Aaron Cross for the first time back in 2012.

That sequel looked set to hit the big screen in 2016, but it has been suggested that a Bourne movie starring Matt Damon could replace it.

Despite all of this uncertainty, Marshall insists that a new film starring Renner is currently being worked on.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reported, the producer said: "That movie is moving forward. It's still in development. We're working to get a script as soon as possible."

It was reported earlier this week that Damon could return to the role of Bourne as director Paul Greengrass has entered talked to helm a fourth film in that franchise.

It was believed that the Renner movie would be put on the back burner to make way for the Damon/Greengrass project, but Marshall has suggested that this film is unaffected by plans and movies elsewhere.

We were introduced to the character of Jason Bourne for the first time in The Bourne Identity in 2002, before reprising the role in The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum in 2004 and 2007.

Renner took over the franchise for the first time in 2012, as Aaron Cross became the focus of the film series.

It's been confirmed that the next Bourne movie will be released in July 2016.
