Joseph Gordon Levitt says that he ignored the advice that Christopher Nolan gave him about not starring in his directorial debut Don Jon.

Levitt will be making his debut later this year and was grateful for the support of Nolan when he told him he was making the move to the director's chair.

And while Levitt may have overlooked Nolan's concerns about starring in his directorial debut he was glad that The Dark Knight Rises director raised this point.

Speaking to the Huffington Post the actor said: "I told Chris Nolan that I was going to direct a movie and he was instantly supportive, which meant a lot to me.

"I told him I was going to act and direct at the same time and he was like, 'Are you sure you want to do that?' So, he wasn't just like, 'Do whatever you want.'

"He was like, 'Are you sure you want to do that your first time?' I said I really do and he was like, 'OK, but I'm raising my hand now and saying that you might want to think about that.

"That's a whole extra challenge that you maybe want to do your second time.'

"Totally valid perspective! Completely valid. I happened to go the other way and still do it, but a very valid question and I'm glad he asked it. Most people probably wouldn't want to ask me that and I'm glad he did."

Don Jon premiered at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year and is one of the most anticipated films of 2013.

Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza all join Levitt on the cast list for the film.
