Keira Knightley says it was 'interesting' to explore the relationship between Alan Turing and Joan Clarke in The Imitation Game.

Knightley takes on the role of Clarke alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, in the highly anticipated drama.

The pair worked at Bletchley Park, where Turing was the driving force in breaking the Enigma code during World War II.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the actress said: "It was an amazing relationship and an amazing friendship that they had.

"It was a friendship that they tried to turn into something else, and obviously it was never going to work. It was really interesting to play around with that."

The movie marks the second time that Knightley and Cumberbatch have worked together: appearing together in Atonement.

They are joined on the cast list by Mark Strong, Charles Dance, and Matthew Goode, while Morten Tyldum is in the director's chair.

There is plenty of excitement surrounding The Imitation Game, and it is being tipped as a possible awards contender.

As for Knightley, she will be back on the big screen later this summer with Begin Again.

The Imitation Game is released 14th November.
