Louis Leterrier has revealed that Mark Ruffalo was the man that he wanted when he helmed The Incredible Hulk back in 2008.

While Leterrier wanted the Oscar nominated actor for the comic book movie it was Edward Norton who was finally cast in the central role of Bruce Banner.

Speaking to the Huffington Post the director said: "I actually wanted to cast Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Marvel was like 'No, you should get Edward Norton because he's more famous.'

"They are the ones who wanted Edward - and I was thrilled to meet him and work with him. I wanted Mark Ruffalo. And they were like, 'No, no, he just does smart, intellectual movies.' Which makes sense, then and there in his career."

Since then Ruffalo has gone to take on the role of Banner in Joss Whedon's film Avengers Assemble - and is set to reprise that role in Avengers 2.

There is also talk of a possible stand alone Hulk movie in phase three of Marvel movies.

As for Leterrier he is back in the director's chair this summer as he helms Now You See Me - a movie that sees him work with Ruffalo for the first time.

It is the first movie outing for the director since he helmed Clash of the Titans and be brings together a great cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

Now You See Me is released 3rd July.
